Dental Assistant Training

Although various for profit schools offer courses related to training Dental Assistants, the Kentucky Dental Practice Act does not require graduation from any specific educational program to become a Dental Assistant. Many Kentucky dentists offer on the job training for those interested in becoming a Dental Assistant. The Kentucky Dental Practice Act does, however, have very specific educational and testing requirements for those desiring to be a Registered Dental Hygienist.

Dental Assistant Overview

X-Ray Certification

All radiography training that is not on the Approved Course List must be approved by the Board before a dental assistant may take x-rays in Kentucky.

To request approval of training that is not on the Approved Course List, please provide the the provider's description and outline of the course and the number of hours. Please send the supporting documentation for radiography course approval to the Kentucky Board of Dentistry to the attention of the Education Committee.

Coronal Polishing

All dental assistants are required to complete a Council on Dental Accreditation accredited program in Coronal Polishing to perform coronal polishing in Kentucky. In order to be certified, a dental assistant must submit documentation to the Board office which clearly shows:

  • Successful completion of the CODA training
  • Full name
  • Current home address
  • Phone number
  • email address

IV Placement Certification

All IV Placement training that is not on the Approved Course List must also be approved by the Board before a dental assistant may place IVs in Kentucky.

To request approval of training that is not on the Approved Course List, you must submit the provider's description and outline of the course and the number of hours spent teaching each topic. Send the supporting documentation for IV Placement course approval to the Kentucky Board of Dentistry to the attention of the Education Committee.
