Continuing Education Q & A

Q: Will I have to take 15 hours each year of the 2 year renewal cycle?
A: No.  You can take all 30 hours at any time during the 2-year renewal cycle.

Q: If I take a 15 hour CPR or other certification course related to this, will it count toward scientific hours?
A: No.  Any hours taken beyond what is required to be certified will not count toward your 30 hour requirement.

Q: Will home study courses count toward my scientific hour requirement?
A: No.  Home study courses only count toward the Category "C" hours.

Q: Will magazine articles, journal articles, computer or video articles count toward scientic hours?
A: No.  These will only count toward the Category "C" hours.

Q: Will hours at a study club meeting, dental society meeting or dental hygiene society meeting count as scientific hours?
A: If you have an approved provider giving dental related information in a presentation format then those hours will count toward the category "B" requirement.

Q: Who will give me documentation of attendance and where do I get it?
A: You are responsible for obtaining this documentation.  Be sure you contact the person or organization that is presenting the hours to obtain this documentation.

Q: If audited, what documentation do I need?
A: You must have signed documentation for all 30 hours plus documentation for the HIV/AIDS course and the CPR course, including providers information, number of hours, and dates attended.

Q: If I attend a dental society meeting or a dental hygienist meeting will I automatically receive one hour of business? 
A: Yes - but you must obtain documentation that you were present at the meeting.
                                      
Q: What if the business portion of the meeting is 2 hours, will I receive 2 hours of business?
A: No.  You will receive only one hour of business unless this is a state dental or a state dental hygiene meeting, for which you would receive 2 hours.

Q: What if I attend a scientific meeting that has not been given by an approved provider?
A: You will not receive any credit for attending such a meeting.

Q: Who are approved providers for categories "B" and "C?" 
A: 
1.  Kentucky Board of Dentistry
2.  American Dental Association
3.  American Academy of General Dentistry
4.  American Dental Hygienists Association
5.  U.S. Military
6.  U.S. Dental Schools
7.  Any U.S. College giving dental related courses
8.  Any State Board of Dentistry.

Q: What does presentation format mean?  
A: Presentation format means that there is a person giving a live presentation.  This could also mean a live presentation via video conferencing.

                             

HIV / AIDS Course Requirement

Q: If I take a 10 hour HIV course, will the remaining 8 hours be considered scientific hours?
A: Yes, as of March 12, 2005, the Board decided an HIV course may count toward the 30 required hours.

Q: How often do I need to take an HIV/AIDS course?
A: Effective July 15, 2001, you only need to take an CHFS approved HIV/AIDS course once every 10 years.

Q: May I take an approved HIV/AIDS course by correspondence or home study?
A: Yes.  If you wish to apply it to your ten year mandatory requirement, it must be approved by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services.

Q: May I take an HIV/AIDS course approved by any organization other than Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services?
A: ONLY those courses with prior approval by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services will be accepted for the ten year mandatory requirement.
