Scam Notice

Please be aware that scammers are currently targeting dental offices and laboratories in Kentucky. A caller or email will generally pretend to be from the Board claiming that the target's license has been involved in illegal activity. The Board's name and number may even appear on the Caller ID.

KBD staff will never contact you in this manner with demands for sensitive information. Do not respond to requests for social security numbers or to send money. Payments to the Board can only be made on our website or by mailing payment directly to our office, never by providing financial information over the phone or in an email. If contacting our office to confirm any suspicious communications you receive, use only the contact information listed on our website. You can also verify your license status on our search page.

If you receive a scam call or email, please report it to the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General via their online Scam Complaint Form.

Change Healthcare Data Breach

In response to the recent Change Healthcare date breach and its impact on prescriber's ability to electronically prescribe controlled substances, the Board of Dentistry would like to remind dentists that KRS 218A.182 (1) (b) and (1)(j) allows for exceptions under these circumstances. When issuing written prescriptions for controlled substances, we recommend that dentists indicate in the patient record that it was filled based on allowed exceptions per KRS 218A.182 due to the data breach response.

Notice of Revisions to Dental Administrative Regulations

Kentucky's regulatory agencies are required by law to update their administrative regulations at least every seven years. The Board of Dentistry's most recent regulatory actions are as follows:

201 KAR 8:533REG (Proposed revisions filed Jan. 2023) - This regulation covers the various licensing processes for dentists in Kentucky, including qualifications for initial licensure as well as license renewal and reinstatement. The proposed revisions are comprehensive but will mostly affect new applicants, not existing licensees. A public hearing on this regulation shall be held March 28, 2024 at 3 p.m. EST at the Board office. Individuals interested in attending this public meeting to comment on the proposed regulation or the associated  materials incorporated by reference shall notify the Board in writing at least five workdays prior to the hearing. In addition to the hearing, written comments will be accepted by the Board through  March 31, 2024 via mail, fax, or email.

201 KAR 8:016 (Finalized 03/22/2023) - The regulation governing dental laboratories received minor edits to clarify existing language but no policy changes were made. Dental lab operators should not experience any changes as a result of this update.

201 KAR 8:520 (Finalized 03/22/2023) - This regulation provides for the various monetary assessments issued by the Board. Aside from creating a small fee for charitable licenses, this new version keeps all other fees unchanged. The vast majority of licensees are unaffected by this change.

201 KAR 8:571 (Finalized 03/22/2023) - Much like the dental laboratory rule, the administrative regulation for dental assistants was reviewed and lightly revised for clarity but no substantive changes were made from the previous version.

Registration Required for Mobile Dentistry

201 KAR 8:601, an administrative regulation that took effect in March 2023, requires all mobile dental facilities and portable dental units in Kentucky to register with the Board of Dentistry. For more information or to register, visit the Mobile Dentistry page.

Mandatory e-Prescribing of Controlled Substances in Effect

As part of the Kentucky Controlled Substances Act, KRS 218A.182 requires electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS), meaning that with few exceptions, paper prescriptions are no longer allowed. This applies to practitioners regardless of practice size, quantity of prescriptions issued, or type of charting system. Prescribers can choose to purchase a standalone prescribing solution or one associated with an electronic health record (EHR) service. For more information, visit the KASPER page or contact the Help Desk.
