The Board of Dentistry consists of 10 members, each appointed by the Governor to a 4 year term. Seven members of the board are licensed dentists and two members are licensed dental hygienists. Dentist members are appointed from a list of 3 names recommended for each position by the resident licensed dentists of Kentucky at an annual election, while dental hygienist members are appointed from a list of 3 names recommended for each position by the resident licensed dental hygienists of Kentucky at an annual election. One member is a citizen at large who is not associated with or financially interested in the practice or business regulated.
One nonvoting ex officio representative from each the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville represent the dental schools' interests. One nonvoting ex officio representative from a hygiene program not associated with the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville represents the dental hygiene programs' interests. The hygiene school seat rotates on a yearly basis. One nonvoting ex officio representative from the Department for Public Health represents the department's interests.
